Creating a Multitiered Approach for Young Readers
November 01, 2025
FOCUS: literacy growth
We saw significant negative impacts on our students’ reading progress after the pandemic, like many districts. Around the same time, Oregon released its Early Literacy Framework, which provided guidance for implementing evidence-based curricula and strengthening instruction. A couple of years later, the state passed the Early Literacy Success initiative to improve literacy among children through 3rd grade.
These and other events caused us to explore the science of reading, a body of research from various disciplines, including cognitive science and education, that uses evidence-based practices to teach reading.
To help students hit their reading and comprehension goals, we needed a more unified, autonomous setup that could support a systematic approach to literacy instruction. After exploring our options, we adopted Lexia LETRS for professional learning and then launched several Lexia Core5 Reading pilots for our youngest learners during the 2022-23 school year.
