STATE OF THE SUPERINTENDENCY

An infographic showing the benefits superintendents receive in contracts, comparing 2024 and 2014

Superintendents typically receive an array of benefits in their employment contracts with boards of education. The particular benefits and the frequency of inclusion in contracts have changed over time.

The accompanying infographic lists all benefits received by at least one-third of superintendents completing an annual compensation survey. The 2014 survey, which listed 11 options, was submitted by 1,711 superintendents, while the 2024 survey, with 20 options, was completed by 2,077.

The frequency of some benefits increased markedly over the 10-year period, according to the two surveys. District-paid life insurance policies went from 20 percent in 2014 to 52 percent in 2024. Deferred compensation increased from 8 percent to 41 percent over that time frame.
