What You’d Like to Tell Your Board But Can’t

BOARD-SAVVY SUPERINTENDENT
After returning to the superintendency following four years with our state superintendents association, I’ve been reminded that while the work may change, relationships stay at the core — especially those between the superintendent and the school board. We’re partners, but sometimes we unintentionally make each other’s jobs harder.
My perspective may be unique, serving six years with a district, four years with the Illinois Association of School Administrators and now back in the same district’s superintendent seat. A state conference session that I’ve presented, “What Your Superintendent Wants to Say to Your Face But Can’t,” has been a perennial hit before superintendents and school board members.
I’m lucky to work with a great board (which is why I came back to work for them). But there are things superintendents wish we could tell our boards. These aren’t complaints — just opportunities to improve communication and trust for the sake of the students we serve.
