In my first few weeks as the new superintendent at Murrieta Valley Unified School District in California, I met a teacher who introduced herself as a “legacy teacher.” Unfamiliar with the term, I asked her for an explanation.
She said she had graduated from our schools, her mother had worked for our school district and now she was continuing that tradition.
That moment sparked an idea: How many other staff members had deeply embedded roots in our district? I soon realized this teacher was not alone.
