FOCUS: Student Support

Our job in education is simple: Take the resources we have and make intentional impacts with students. When kids are given the opportunity to succeed while feeling they belong within a school community, they become more engaged and school culture flourishes.

A Gallup survey in 2018 discovered that only 47 percent of students said they were engaged at school, and 24 percent said they were “actively disengaged.”

One reason many feel disconnected is because they don’t feel they fit the typical athlete or scholar mold at school. They haven’t yet had a taste of athletic success and may feel unseen and lost on the fringes of school involvement.

One simple tweak school administrators and educators can make is to use the language of belonging when talking with students about available athletic activities. Offering options with diverse participation opportunities that appeal to a wide variety of students can play a huge role in engaging hard-to-reach students.
